If you’re a fan of a team that finished in third place in a World Cup group, the immediate question on your lips was: “Are we in?”Unlike in 32-team tournaments from 1998 to 2022, where only each group’s top two teams advanced, this year, eight of the 12 third-place teams have moved on to the new round of 32.Those standings were determined by points, then goal differential — and, perhaps most critically, were not finalized until all groups had finished play. The last group-stage matches finished at 12 a.m. Eastern on Sunday. The new format meant that very few countries were eliminated before their final group-stage game. Thirty-six of the 48 teams entered that match with at least some chance of finishing third. It went right to the wire for Iran, whose final match on Friday, a 1-1 draw against Egypt, ended in hugely controversial circumstances. Iran thought they had a late winner through Shoja Khalilzadeh only for the video assistant referee (VAR) to rule it out for offside. They were sitting in the final qualifying place for a third place team until the very final matches of the group stage, with the result of Austria vs Algeria determining whether Iran would go through or go home. The only result that would have dumped Iran out was a draw, and that was how it finished in Kansas City, 3-3 in wild circumstances. Here are the teams that advanced as the eight best third-place finishers…DR Congo (Group K) — 4 points, + 1 GD (goal differential)Colombia won the group after their 0-0 draw with Portugal on Saturday, as Cristiano Ronaldo and his team went through second.
