The move comes as ongoing nationwide protests denounce government corruption and negligence

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced on Saturday that he would resign in the coming weeks and campaign for the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in the next parliamentary election, whose electoral list will run under the name “United Serbia.”

Addressing supporters outside the National Assembly in Belgrade, Vučić said this was the last time he was speaking before “such a large crowd” as Serbia’s president, adding that he would remain in office for only “a few more weeks.”

“I believe we will win by a bigger margin than ever before,” Vučić said in an address broadcast live by almost all of Serbia’s leading television channels.

The announcement came during a rally organised by the ruling SNS on the occasion of Vidovdan, one of Serbia’s most important national and religious holidays. Held under the slogan “Serbia, One Family”, the gathering is widely seen as the opening of the ruling party’s election campaign and a response to the student-led anti-government protests that have continued for more than a year and a half.
