Amnesty International Nigeria has condemned the arrest and continued detention of Kaduna-based political critic and opposition politician, Jonah Bonet, popularly known as "Pompo".
The global human rights organisation described his arrest as arbitrary and an abuse of power while demanding his immediate and unconditional release.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the organisation accused security operatives of punishing Bonet solely for exercising his constitutional right to criticise the administration of Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.
"Amnesty International strongly condemns the arbitrary arrest and detention of Mr. Jonah Bonet, popularly known as 'Pompo' solely for criticising the government of Kaduna State," the organisation said.
According to Amnesty International, "Mr. Bonet did not commit any crime, and his arrest is a clear abuse of power. It is perfectly within his right to criticise any government official — no matter his position or status."
