Senegal's Pape Gueye, left, celebrates a goal during their World Cup match against Iraq.
Senegal have made history by becoming the first African nation to score five goals in a single FIFA World Cup match, with a stunning second-half double from Pape Gueye inspiring them to a 5-0 demolition of 10-man Iraq in their final Group I fixture.
The emphatic victory drastically boosts the Lions of Teranga's chances of progressing to the round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams. Aliou Cissé’s side now boast the superior goal difference among the teams locked on three points. Conversely, Iraq head home without a single point, drawing the curtain on a hugely disappointing campaign that followed an arduous qualification route.
Senegal struck early in Texas, with Habib Diarra getting the slightest of touches to guide home Abdoulaye Seck's towering header from an inswinging corner. The breakthrough marked Diarra's first international goal since his memorable strike in a friendly against England last year.
Iraq's already slim hopes of rescuing their tournament suffered a catastrophic hammer blow just moments later. Defender Rebin Sulaka had been drafted into the starting line-up by manager Graham Arnold, but his contribution lasted a mere 13 minutes.
