BOSTON — The infield depth for the Boston Red Sox took yet another hit Friday as shortstop Marcelo Mayer landed on the injured list with a bone stress reaction in his left forearm.Mayer said he’s been dealing with the forearm pain on and off for the last two months.“Some days have been worse than others,” he said. “But just had a talk with the medical staff, with the doctors, and they pretty much said to put a stop to it, or it could possibly get worse. So that’s the decision that we made.”The 23-year-old said he couldn’t recall it occurring on one particular play, but the pain has affected him on both sides of the ball, particularly when swinging a bat. Through 70 games this season, he was hitting .220 with a .594 OPS.“Some days it’s to the extent where I could barely close my glove on defense, and then other days it’s just I feel a little bit like when I swing,” he said. “Some days better than others, but definitely feel it when I swing.”Mayer is the fourth Red Sox infielder to land on the IL over the last five weeks. He originally moved from second base to shortstop when Trevor Story went on the IL on May 16 with a sports hernia.Infielder Nick Sogard, who had been called up in Story’s place, hit the IL with a right oblique strain June 3, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa went to the IL with a forearm bone stress reaction similar to Mayer’s on June 20. Interim manager Chad Tracy said Mayer and Kiner-Falefa had imaging done, and Kiner-Falefa’s stress reaction is worse than Mayer’s, but both have been prescribed a period of rest before they’ll be reassessed.Mayer reacts after striking out to end the fourth inning against the New York Yankees (Brian Fluharty/Getty Images)Mayer hoped he could return sooner rather than later, particularly with Story on the IL. Story has been ramping up his own progression and began taking groundballs in the infield this week. He’s eligible to return shortly after the All-Star break and remains hopeful he can hit that mark.
