It’s been on digital since May and arrived on its streaming home, MGM+, earlier in June. But fans of Project Hail Mary who also prize physical media finally have a blast-off date for 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD versions: August 11. Elite collectors may want to hold out for the SteelBook gift set, coming October 13. If you pick up the 4K or Blu-ray, bonus features include five deleted scenes (hopefully all Rocky-related), a commentary track with directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (no Rocky?), and a featurette, “Earth’s Favorite Eridian” (finally, confirmed Rocky representation). You can preorder on Amazon now. The SteelBook edition, which includes three discs, comes with “additional features including new bonus content, a collectible booklet, and more,” according to a press release from Amazon MGM Studios and Alliance Home Entertainment. It’s also up for preorder on Amazon now.

While nearly every theatrical movie still gets a physical release these days (even Zach Cregger’s Barbarian, at long last), Project Hail Mary feels like a film especially well suited to the format. It was a big hit thanks to its propulsive story (script by Drew Goddard, based on the book by Andy Weir), endearing characters (especially Rocky), stellar special effects (including Rocky), and message of hope that actually felt earnest and well-earned rather than forced. You can see it becoming a timeless classic that people will want to rewatch over and over, and it’s always good to have an actual copy to hold in your hands in that case.
