Ukraine is working to establish a new mechanism for the return of civilian hostages, and the families of Ukrainians held captive by Russia may receive good news in the near future.
Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, made this statement during a television appearance, according to Ukrinform.
“To date, we have managed to repatriate 457 civilian hostages,” the ombudsman said.
He noted that the process of repatriating civilian hostages is not easy, as there are various initiatives but no clear mechanism in place.
“We are currently trying to create a new mechanism, because under international humanitarian law, we cannot carry out prisoner exchanges,” Lubinets explained.
