The president of the Brazilian football federation (CBF) has written to FIFA president Gianni Infantino after Vinicius Junior had a goal disallowed in the group stage win over Scotland at the World Cup on Wednesday.Samir Xaud’s letter made a “request for consistent application of VAR intervention standards and referee appointment considerations”.Vinicius Jr had given Brazil a 1-0 lead over Scotland in their final group game and looked to have doubled his tally after taking the ball off defender Jack Hendry on the edge of the box and slotting past goalkeeper Angus Gunn. However, the video assistant referee recommended an on-field review of the incident to match official Cesar Arturo Ramos Palazuelos, who subsequently disallowed the goal.Brazil eventually won the game 3-0 after Vinicius Jr netted his second just before half-time and Matheus Cunha scored on the hour mark.In the letter, Xaud said that the CBF appreciated FIFA’s “continued efforts to enhance the quality and credibility of refereeing” at the tournament and added that they were not concerned with the incident itself and were looking instead for consistency. The disallowed Brazilian goal against Scotland in the 21st minute “does not appear to be aligned with the philosophy adopted throughout the competition”, he said.Xaud pointed to the reaction of the Scotland players, arguing that they had “they had not anticipated a review or the subsequent disallowance of the goal”.Xaud went on to say that the CBF wanted to “avoid situations where referees with a history of significant controversies involving a specific national team are repeatedly assigned to that team’s matches”.On this point, the letter referenced the appointment of Ramos, who officiated Brazil’s group stage game against Switzerland at a previous World Cup eight years ago.Xaud claimed that Switzerland’s equaliser in the 1-1 draw was “allowed despite a foul committed against the Brazilian defender immediately before the goal”.The incident in question, which saw Brazil players briefly allege that goalscorer Steven Zuber had pushed defender Miranda before leaping for a corner, was checked and cleared by VAR.The Mexican FA and FIFA have been approached by The Athletic for comment.Brazil finished top of Group C and will now take on Japan in Houston, Texas in the round of 32 on Monday.Jun 26, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern.
