[Handout/Hellenic Police]

Greece’s police on Friday issued a public warning over a fake website masquerading as its own that was set up by fraudsters to steal money, or identity and banking data.

A police statement said the site was very close in appearance to the official Hellenic Police website, but its address was astynomiiia.cc instead of the original astynomia.gr.

The statement said people sent to the site were instructed to pay a supposed outstanding traffic fine, logging on with their vehicle number plates.

It urged members of the public to never make any payment or enter personal or banking data on the fake site. It said people who already have done so should immediately contact their banks, and then notify the police.
