Montenegrin police announced that, in cooperation with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), they have arrested a 39-year-old Iranian citizen in the coastal city of Kotor. The individual was wanted for alleged involvement in cyberattacks against U.S. educational and computer infrastructure.
According to the police statement, he was wanted under a New York court warrant on charges including conspiracy to commit computer fraud, hacking, and identity theft. U.S. authorities claim the attacks have been carried out since 2013 against more than 150 universities, causing approximately $3.4 billion in damages.
The extradition case for the individual has now been referred to the High Court of Podgorica in Montenegro for review.
