INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark will not play in Saturday’s home game against the Los Angeles Sparks due to a back injury, coach Stephanie White announced at practice Friday. This will mark the second time this season Clark misses a game because of the issue. After their game versus the Sparks, the Fever have seven days before their next game, at the Las Vegas Aces on July 5.Clark exited Wednesday’s loss to the Phoenix Mercury in the third quarter after aggravating her back injury. The two-time All-Star has been managing back issues all season, even leaving the season opener multiple times to get her “back adjusted,” per Clark. The Fever likely will turn to veteran Tyasha Harris and rookie Raven Johnson to handle point guard duties while Clark is sidelined. Kelsey Mitchell, the Fever’s starting shooting guard, said she’d also be ready to take on more ballhandling and play-making responsibilities in Clark’s absence.Clark got tangled up with Mercury veteran Alyssa Thomas in Wednesday’s contest. White said after the game, “I’m not sure if it had any impact on (Clark’s) health,” but she blasted the referees for missing the second-quarter incident. Clark lost her balance while dribbling down the lane, and when she fell to the ground, Thomas dove on the floor to try to get the ball away from Clark. Thomas, however, appeared to use a closed right fist to push down on Clark’s neck during the scrum.
