Image: Antti Lähteenmäki / YleYle News15:45Finland's entire public sector will be operating on an Artificial Intelligence (AI) basis by 2031, according to Juha Majanen, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance.In an interview with Helsingin Sanomat published on Friday, Majanen revealed that a common AI platform is to be built for the Finnish state, municipalities and regional healthcare authorities by the end of the next electoral term.He added that the move is being made as part of a wider strategy to improve the productivity of Finland's public sector bodies, and to secure the financial viability of the Finnish welfare state.Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Juha Majanen, pictured in 2024. Image: Pekka Koli / YleAccording to HS, this means many public sector employees will be replaced by AI assistants that have been trained to perform the same tasks that humans currently do."AI will essentially replace humans," Majanen confirmed.He further explained that the number of job losses caused by the move to AI will be mitigated by not hiring new people to replace those who retire. However, he also conceded that many people in the public sector will lose their jobs as a result of the transition.
