The government has added the Republic of Moldova to the list of countries whose citizens are eligible for the simplified procedure for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko announced this on Telegram following a meeting with Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, according to Ukrinform.

“Ukrainians in the Republic of Moldova will have the opportunity to acquire Ukrainian citizenship through a simplified procedure. The government has added the Republic of Moldova to the list of countries whose citizens are eligible for this mechanism,” the post reads.

Svyrydenko noted that this decision is a logical step, as our countries share a common border and a common path toward the European Union, and there is also a large Ukrainian community living in Moldova; therefore, Ukraine wants people to have easier access to Ukrainian citizenship.

The next task is to make the procedure as convenient as possible. Currently, to obtain citizenship, one must pass exams on the Ukrainian language, the Constitution, and the history of Ukraine, but these exams can only be taken in Ukraine. The government is working to make it possible to take these exams remotely. It is also necessary to streamline the final stage of document processing through diplomatic missions abroad.
