The powerful tremors reduced buildings to rubble, cracked roads, and left structures leaning precariously across several cities, including parts of Caracas.
Venezuela's Health Minister, Carlos Alvarado, said at least 235 people have been killed and more than 4,300 injured after two powerful earthquakes struck the country's northern region on Wednesday evening, leaving widespread destruction and thousands of people still unaccounted for.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the back-to-back earthquakes measured magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, striking less than a minute apart.
According to reports, nearly 50,000 people are missing following the disaster.
