A 94-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh has captured public attention after giving up her US citizenship and seeking to regain Indian citizenship, saying her final wish is to spend her remaining years in her homeland and "die as an Indian." Kondragunta Mahalakshmamma, a native of Chinthagumpala village in Chinaganjam mandal of Bapatla district, recently approached district authorities with an emotional appeal to expedite her citizenship application. A video of her meeting officials has since gone viral on social media. Accompanied by her son, Buchaiah Choudhary, Mahalakshmamma met Bapatla District Collector J. Venkata Murali on Wednesday and requested that her application for Indian citizenship be processed at the earliest. Mahalakshmamma moved to Petersburg, Virginia, in the United States after the death of her husband, Nagabhushanam. She went there to live with her son, an oncologist, and became a US citizen in July 2000. She spent nearly 18 years in the United States before returning to India in 2018.— RShivshankar (@RShivshankar) After her son joined NRI Hospital in Mangalagiri, she settled permanently in her native village in Andhra Pradesh. Since then, she has expressed a desire to regain her Indian citizenship and spend the rest of her life in the country where she was born. According to Mahalakshmamma, she has already renounced her US citizenship and submitted an application for Indian citizenship through the government's online portal. She told officials that she wants her final rites to be performed in her native village. "Collector garu, I am nearing 95 years of age. My only wish is to spend my final days in my motherland as an Indian citizen. I want my last rites to be performed in my native village. I have already given up my US citizenship. Please help me obtain Indian citizenship at the earliest," she said. She also assured authorities that she would abide by the Constitution of India and comply with all laws if her Indian citizenship is restored. Mahalakshmamma urged officials to grant her the legal right to spend the remainder of her life in the nation of her birth. Responding to her request, the district collector said the application would be processed according to established procedures. Following the completion of the inquiry, a report will be sent to the state government, which will then forward its recommendation to the Centre for consideration of her citizenship application.
