NEW YORK, June 26. /TASS/. The US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) has dispatched several warships and transport aircraft to the post-earthquake relief effort in Venezuela.
"SOUTHCOM Commander Gen. Francis Donovan has directed significant forces to the [relief] effort, including the amphibious transport ship USS Fort Lauderdale (LPD 28) and the littoral combat ship USS Billings (LCS 15). C-17 Globemaster and C-130 Hercules transport aircraft will also support, along with reconnaissance platforms and rotary-wing aircraft," the Command said in a press release.
According to it, these forces will provide mobility services and "support to US government personnel, search and rescue teams, and US interagency partners" in assessing damage, locating those injured and delivering them critical assistance.
The earthquake struck Venezuela late on June 24. Within about 40 seconds, two series of tremors of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 were recorded. Their epicenters were located 10 km from each other in the state of Yaracuy. The death toll from earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday night has climbed to 235, with more than 4,300 people injured, the republic’s Health Minister Carlos Alvarado said live on Venezolana de Television earlier.
