AP PhotoJapan and Sweden shared the points in a 1-1 draw on Thursday, with both teams securing places in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup.The result saw Japan finish second in Group F behind the Netherlands, while Sweden also advanced to the Round of 32. Japan will now face tournament favourites Brazil on Monday, while Sweden's next opponents will be confirmed after the remaining group-stage matches. After a quiet first half, the game came alive in the second period. Japan struck first in the 56th minute when Ritsu Doan played a perfectly weighted pass to Daizen Maeda, who controlled the ball before calmly finishing past goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom. The goal was Japan's seventh of the tournament, the country's highest-ever tally in a single World Cup, surpassing the six goals they scored during their run to the Round of 16 in 2018.Sweden responded quickly. Just six minutes later, Anthony Elanga fired a superb left-footed strike from outside the penalty area that beat Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki to level the scores. It was Elanga's second goal of the tournament. Both teams had chances to find a winner. Alexander Isak came close for Sweden, but Suzuki produced an excellent save before later tipping another header onto the crossbar in stoppage time and gathering the loose ball.Sweden also earned eight corner kicks compared to Japan's two, but the Japanese defence stood firm to ensure they left with the point they needed. The draw means Japan have reached the World Cup knockout stage for the third consecutive edition and for the fifth time in the last seven tournaments since first making the Round of 16 on home soil in 2002.Sweden, meanwhile, continued their impressive World Cup record, progressing beyond the group stage for the fourth consecutive time they have qualified for the tournament, a run stretching back to 1994.
