Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria
The Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria, Lagos State chapter, has called for urgent reforms in the building control system and the prosecution of individuals responsible for substandard construction practices following two separate building collapses that occurred within 48 hours.
The Chairman of REDAN Lagos Chapter, Tony Kolawole, made the call in a statement on Thursday while reacting to the collapse of a five-storey building in Rivers State on June 24 and a three-storey shopping complex at Alakija, Lagos, on June 25.
Kolawole described the incidents as a painful reminder of persistent failures in construction oversight, warning that building collapses were often linked to negligence, regulatory breaches and compromises in the construction process.
“Buildings do not collapse by accident. They collapse because someone cut corners on materials, because approvals were obtained through compromise rather than compliance, because inspections were skipped, ignored, or bypassed,” he said.
