OTTAWA — Raising the political stakes for Alberta’s separation vote this fall, Prime Minister Mark Carney insisted Thursday that the referendum is “real” and could derail national efforts to position Canada as a reliable partner in an uncertain world.
Speaking at a news conference on Parliament Hill Thursday, Carney said he plans to speak plainly about what he sees as a consequential vote — rather than a potential prelude to a more important one — and that is part of his government’s strategy as it fights for Canadian unity.
