“Dekh Rahe Ho Binod?” This line from the acclaimed web series Panchayat, have become not just meme fodder but also became synonymous with the hit show. It also made Binod, aka Ashok Pathak, a household name. Today, he has won hearts across the country for his unforgettable comic timing in the character of Binod, a simpleton villager, but for the actor, the road to success was anything but smooth. As reported by Better India, Ashok Pathak’s journey to success is a powerful example of perseverance triumphing over adversity. Born into a modest family, he grew up watching his father work as a daily wage labourer. To support the household, he would travel nearly 20 kilometres every day on a bicycle, carrying cotton for sale and earning barely ₹100. There were no influential contacts, financial advantages, or opportunities handed to the family. What carried Ashok forward was determination, talent, and an unwavering commitment to his dreams.Despite these hardships, he nurtured a deep passion for acting. His talent became evident during his college years when he received the Best Actor award at a youth festival, a milestone that strengthened his confidence and convinced him to pursue a career in cinema.Armed with savings of ₹40,000 and a dream that seemed impossible to many, Ashok moved to Mumbai in search of acting opportunities. One of his early opportunities was a short stint with Sony Max, which paid him ₹2,500. Soon afterward, he appeared in a commercial for Domino’s Pizza and earned ₹70,000—an amount that seemed extraordinary to him at the time and gave him renewed confidence. His entry into the film industry came in 2012 with Bittoo Boss. Although the debut appeared to be a promising breakthrough, the film failed to make an impact at the box office. The road ahead was far from easy. He frequently encountered rejection and ridicule. Many people dismissed his ambitions, claiming that his appearance did not fit the conventional standards associated with Bollywood heroes. Such comments could have discouraged anyone, but Ashok chose to persist. For years, he sustained himself by taking on small and supporting roles across various productions such as 102 Not out (which starred Rishi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan), Jhoota Kahika etc. The struggle continued until opportunities gradually began to open up. Interestingly, he nearly turned down the character of Binod, a role that would eventually become one of the most memorable parts of his career. His journey reached a significant milestone in 2024 when he attended the Cannes Film Festival for Sister Midnight. The film received an extraordinary ten-minute standing ovation, placing him on an international stage and marking a dramatic contrast to the difficult years he had spent fighting for recognition.According to a Koimoi report, Ashok earned a decent Rs 3.2 lakh in Panchayat season 2. Written by Chandan Kumar and directed by Deepak Kumar Mishra and Akshat Vijaywargiya, Panchayat follows an engineering graduate who becomes the secretary of a village panchayat in the fictional Uttar Pradesh village of Phulera after struggling to find better employment opportunities. Featuring performers such as Jitendra Kumar, Raghubir Yadav, Neena Gupta, Chandan Roy, Faisal Malik, Sanvikaa, and Ashok Pathak, the series has become one of India’s most beloved streaming shows.
