EFF representatives and West Coast fishing representatives submit an urgent petition to Parliament, calling for an investigation into job security concerns and alleged corporate practices affecting workers in Laaiplek, St Helena Bay and Velddrif.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has submitted an urgent petition to the National Assembly of South Africa, calling for parliamentary intervention to halt retrenchments and alleged corporate misconduct in the West Coast fishing and canning sector.
The petition, submitted alongside representatives of the West Coast fishing community from Laaiplek, St Helena Bay, and Velddrif, targets major fishing operators including the Oceana Group and its Lucky Star Fishing Company operations, as well as the Amawandle Pelagic facility.
It accuses the companies of benefiting from public fishing quotas while failing to uphold socio-economic commitments tied to those rights.
“Fishing corporations secure valuable public fishing quotas through promises of job creation and community upliftment, only to proceed with factory consolidations and mass retrenchments once those rights are obtained.”
