The writer says award-winning investigative journalist Devi Sankaree Govender receives many insults and jibes. A few crooks have even tried to lay hands on her.

I ENJOY watching the Devi Show every Sunday. Devi is an investigative journalist who exposes corruption. She is a petite bundle of energy. She reminds me of a fireball.

Being an investigative journalist is not an easy job. When a lead arrives, it takes hours of research and fact checking before a story can be aired. Often a sting operation is also used to prove the allegations.

Devi is the face of the show and someone who doesn’t hesitate to ask tough questions. She knows that the job comes with its own risks, yet despite this, she puts on her big girl broeks, and weighs in boots and all. She receives many insults and jibes along the way. A few crooks have even tried to lay hands on her.

I applaud her drive and enthusiasm for the job. Some of the insults are racist, like when she was told to go back to Lenasia (presumably because a lot of Indians live there), or being referred to as a c****e. Other comments are just silly, like when a fraudster who appeared twice on her show told her that she caused problems for him because his mother watched the show, and that he didn’t believe one Indian should act like that to another Indian. She just laughed and rolled her eyes at his stupidity.
