On the Garden Route, that reason might now be a giant whale tail that looks suspiciously like a Belgian waffle.
Towering above the entrance to Formosa Bay Resort in Plettenberg Bay, the newly unveiled Waffling Whale Tail is designed to do exactly what roadside attractions have done for decades — make travellers hit the brakes, grab their phones and take a photo.
Standing about five metres high, the structure has been developed by Big Ideas 3D Printing for The Beekman Group and is described by its creators as Africa's largest 3D-printed structure. Its textured surface mimics the pattern of a waffle, while the base has been designed to resemble flowing syrup, creating a playful visual link to the resort's Waffling Whale Café.
