OTTAWA — Whichever route Alberta picks for its proposed oil pipeline to the B.C. coast, the federal government will have to do a swift but thorough consultation with Indigenous Peoples to avoid time-consuming court challenges, all with a looming separation referendum hanging over the process.
The timeline the Alberta and federal government have agreed to has Alberta submitting a pipeline proposal by July 1, and Ottawa deciding on whether to designate it as a project of national interest by Oct. 1. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has said she hopes to have the first shovels in the ground by fall of 2027.
