France, like the UK, is currently enduring a record-breaking heatwave, with a “heat dome” pushing temperatures to 44°C in some parts of the country.

More than half of France remains under a severe heat alert as temperatures – which rose to their highest since records began in 1947 on Tuesday – are not predicted to ease until the weekend.

In response to the heatwave, French authorities have implemented a series of measures such as banning alcohol in public places during the annual Fête de la Musique national music festival.

Around 1,300 schools were closed on Monday and local governments across France have opened public libraries, museums and cinemas so that people can escape the punishing heat.
