Facebook Meta has paused an employee-tracking programme, the company confirmed, following an internal security leak earlier this week that left data from the scheme potentially accessible to anyone within the company.

The Model Capability Initiative (MCI) has been unpopular with employees since it rolled out in April, in part because data from the mandatory tracking tools was to be used to train AI models to replace human staff.

Employees were also concerned about security around the huge amounts of detailed data collected, which tracks all of an employee’s cursor movements, mouse clicks and keystrokes.

Tracking data

Meta assured staff the data would be kept secure, but on Monday an engineer issued an internal security notice stating that databases containing MCI data had been exposed to anyone inside the company.
