Olivia Wilde denied longstanding rumours that she had a “screaming match” with Florence Pugh during the filming of Don't Worry Darling, saying reports of an on-set confrontation were untrue. “I’ve never had a screaming match on my set. I was never not available on set,” Wilde told The Cut. “I wanted to be like, ‘None of this is true.’” The release of Don’t Worry Darling, Wilde’s second directorial feature, was overshadowed by a series of controversies, from Shia LaBeouf denying he was fired from the project to a viral video purportedly showing Harry Styles spitting on Chris Pine. A Vulture report in September 2022 alleged that tensions between Wilde and Pugh escalated into a “blowout argument” and “screaming match” roughly three-quarters into production. An anonymous source told the outlet Pugh had grown frustrated with Wilde’s “frequent unexplained absences” and with the director’s relationship with Styles, which became public during the rollout of the film. Wilde, 42, said that she had wanted to publicly deny the allegations when they first surfaced but was advised against responding. “I was told, ‘Don’t say a f****** word. Just go out there and smile,’” she said. “I resent that but it taught me it’s not the way I want to handle things.”Don't Worry Darling follows Pugh’s Alice Chambers as she begins to question the unsettling reality behind the seemingly perfect desert community she shares with her husband Jack, played by Styles. The psychological thriller opened to mixed reviews, with critics largely singling out Pugh’s performance for praise. It earned $87.6m worldwide on an estimated $35m budget.Watch Apple TV+ free for 7 dayNew subscribers only. £9.99/mo. after free trial. Plan auto-renews until cancelled.Try for freeADVERTISEMENT. While her absence at the film’s official press conference at the 79th Venice International Film Festival was said to be because she was filming Dune: Part Two, many also noticed that she posted minimally about the film on social media and appeared to keep a physical distance from Wilde.Public scrutiny also grew around Wilde’s relationship with Styles, 32, who replaced LaBeouf in the film. Wilde told The Cut that the relationship, which lasted about two years before ending in late 2022, was “loving and wonderful and joyful”. But she said the backlash around both the romance and the film “robbed me of my naïveté for sure”. “I deeply hate the feeling of being misunderstood, too,” Wilde added. The Independent has contacted Pugh’s representatives for comment.Pugh has never openly commented on the reported feud, fuelling the rumours as the actor has a vocal presence on social media. She had shared a photo set on Instagram of the film’s cast and crew, writing that she would “always be grateful” for her time on the film.Olivia Wilde denied longstanding rumours that she had a ’screaming match’ with Florence Pugh during the filming of Don't Worry Darling (Getty Images)More than 40 crew members from Don’t Worry Darling, including producer Katie Silberman, costume designer Arianne Phillips and cinematographer Matthew Libatique had issued a joint statement at the time rejecting claims of misconduct on set. “There was never a screaming match between our director and anyone, let alone a member of our cast,” the statement said. The group described allegations of unprofessional behaviour during production as “completely false”.Wilde too had denied there was a feud between her and Pugh. “Having been a known figure for a while,” she told Elle magazine, “makes me well-equipped to have a Teflon exterior. But it also means that you’re under a different kind of microscope.”“It’s brought my attention to the media and how it pits women against one another. It is shocking to see so many untruths about yourself traded as fact.”
