GILGIT: An attempt to smuggle mobile phones from China to Pakistan was thwarted on Wednesday near the Khunjerab top by a joint operation involving Pakistan Customs, the Facilitation Mechanisms Team and local police.
A passenger bus arriving from the Chinese border was intercepted in the Kokcil area for checking and examination. During a thorough search of the vehicle, mobile phones concealed at various locations within the bus were recovered, according to a statement issued by Pakistan Customs Sost Dry Port.
A total of 163 mobile phones worth Rs20 million were seized. The devices included 18 Xiaomi mobile phones, one OnePlus mobile phone and 144 Apple iPhones of assorted models. All recovered mobile phones were found to be old, used and JV (carrier-locked) devices.
The seized mobile phones have been taken into Customs custody for further investigation.
