Bafana Bafana forward Thapelo Maseko celebrates his goal against South Korea.

Bafana Bafana defied the odds and beat South Korea 1-0 at Estadio Monterrey on Thursday to book their first ever spot in the knockout round of the FIFA World Cup.

The pivotal moment in the match came in the 63rd minute through a goal scored by Thapelo Maseko.

Bafana coach Hugo Broos said afterwards the win was the culmination of five years of work and he also had the belief that his team could possibly progress further.

The win took Bafana to four points to finish in second place in the group, automatically advancing to the next round. Mexico finished top of Group A, after beating Czechia 3-0 in a simultaneous fixture on Thursday.
