Landon DuPont, the potential No. 1 pick in the 2027 NHL Draft and the WHL’s first exceptional status defenseman, has announced his commitment to play at the University of Michigan.He’ll join the Wolverines for the 2026-27 season and play his draft year in the Big Ten and NCAA.The 17-year-old made the announcement on the same day he was named to the CHL Third All-Star Team. DuPont led the Everett Silvertips to a WHL title and the Memorial Cup final as a 16-year-old this season and registered 102 points in 85 combined regular-season and postseason games. According to a source close to DuPont, he played through a high-ankle sprain in Kelowna at the Memorial Cup, where he still managed to register six points in four games.A year ago, as a 15-year-old, DuPont registered 75 points in 74 regular-season and playoff games with the Silvertips. The 6-foot, 190-pound right-shot defenseman has put together two of the best under-17 seasons by a defenseman in WHL history.Michigan lands DuPontLast week, DuPont visited the two finalists in his college hockey recruitment, traveling from his home base in Calgary to Detroit for tours of Michigan and Michigan State. His first of the two visits was with the Spartans at East Lansing’s Munn Ice Arena, before making his way to Ann Arbor to meet with Michigan staff at Yost Ice Arena.
