As the pop royalty wedding of the century between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce approaches, so do the clues. The New York Times first reported on a permit for street closures around Madison Square Garden in Midtown Manhattan from July 2 to around noon July 4 for a July 3 event, citing three anonymous sources. The Times reported on the wedding occurring at the Garden.USA TODAY confirmed permits have been filed to close down city streets near the iconic arena, as well as for an event with capacity for several hundred attendees. Dora Pekec, a New York City Hall spokesperson, confirmed to USA TODAY the existence of permitting as the Times has first reported. City Hall declined to share the physical permit. The request includes capacity for between 500 and 999 people, tents outside of Madison Square Garden, and street closures near Madison Square Garden. The permit was made through the city Street Activity Permit Office, Pekec said. Pekec added permitting for street closures span only the area near the Garden, not several city blocks.Pekec said it’s not uncommon for events of potentially similar size to apply for permits.“That just means they’re going to put proper protocols to make sure everyone’s safe and can get around,” Pekec said.Citing anonymous sources, The New York Times also reported that some of Kelce’s Kansas City Chiefs teammates have booked hotel rooms for dates around July 3 at the Marriott Marquis, about 12 blocks from the arena in Times Square.USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Swift and Madison Square Garden for comment.Speculation about the impending nuptials between the pop icon and her NFL beau have swirled for months, with fans and media scurrying for any crumbs that indicate the wedding – or, perhaps, a post-ceremony reception – will indeed be held at the most famous venue in the world, a site befitting Swift’s status in the music industry. The venue would also provide seclusion for their celebrity guest list as it has an underground ramp to the arena that would allow them private access away from cameras. If the Swift/Kelce production indeed takes place at the busy Manhattan hub, it will add to an already congested weekend. A massive fireworks celebration for July 4 is planned near the Brooklyn Bridge and Hudson River in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary, while a World Cup match is scheduled for MetLife Stadium (rebranded as New York New Jersey Stadium) July 5.
