Russia is taking steps to protect and expand its tanker fleet in response to a rise in the seizures of its vessels by "unfriendly" countries. In the latest incident, earlier this month, UK armed forces boarded and detained a Cameroon-flagged tanker, the Smyrtos, which was transporting Russian crude oil through the English Channel on its way to the Suez Canal.
