At least 35 Nigerian military personnel standing trial over allegations that they plotted to overthrow the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have continued to appear in court while wearing handcuffs and leg chains, despite repeated appeals by their legal representatives, SaharaReporters has learned.

In videos obtained by SaharaReporters, one of the accused personnel was seen in handcuffs and leg chains.

Meanwhile, sources said that whenever the accused personnel need to relieve themselves or use the restroom, they are required to remain shackled with both handcuffs and leg chains.

Sources familiar with the proceedings told SaharaReporters on Tuesday that the accused officers and soldiers were brought before the court in restraints, including handcuffs and leg chains, a practice that has generated concerns over compliaNce with constitutional safeguards and fair trial standards.
