Your questions about children’s mattresses answeredWhat is the best children’s mattress? I feel the Slumberland flip two-in-one mattress is a worthy winner. After all, my nine-year-old tester dubbed it “the comfiest mattress ever”, which says it all. I also highly recommend the Panda London hybrid bamboo mattress, which, while expensive, is an exceptional quality mattress with superb breathability and supreme comfort. If your budget can’t stretch that far, the Stompa S flex airflow pocket mattress offers brilliant support and comfort at a fantastic price. What safety credentials should I look for when buying a child’s mattress?“Always check to see if the mattress has the small BS7177 label sewn into the border. This signifies that the manufacturer has had the product specification tested to meet UK flammability regulations. For added peace of mind, buy a mattress made by an approved National Bed Federation (NBF) member. All NBF members are independently audited to ensure their products are safe, use only clean fillings and are what they claim to be,” explains Simon Williams from the National Bed Federation. How much should I spend on a child’s mattress?“Everyone’s budget is different, but as a general rule, you shouldn’t scrimp on buying a product that your child not only uses for eight hours a day, but one that is so vital to their growth and development. Kids do most of their growing at night (the body releases the largest amount of human growth hormone during deep sleep), so get the best mattress that you can afford,” says Williams. How I tested the best kids’ mattresses: With the help of my kids, we tested a range of different mattresses. I considered all of the expert advice that Simon Williams from the National Bed Federation shared. Collectively, my kids and I considered the following factors when testing: Comfort: Of course, comfort is key to a good night’s sleep, so I quizzed all of my testers on how soft they found each mattress, while looking at factors like cushioning and pressure relief.Support: I took into consideration the level of support each mattress offered, ensuring they were firm enough to keep growing bodies supported, without feeling uncomfortable. I also looked for edge-to-edge support to keep sagging at bay – and stop younger kids from rolling out of the bed.Temperature regulation: Children aren’t able to regulate their temperature as well as adults, particularly during deep sleep, so I favoured mattresses that provided a high level of breathability and those that helped wick away moisture.Care: I looked for mattresses that were easy to care for, whether through zip-off washable covers or easy spot cleaning. Mattresses that didn’t need to be regularly flipped or rotated also scored highly. Delivery and setup: I paid close attention to how easy it was to take delivery of and unpack each mattress. I also considered how long boxed and rolled-up mattresses took to expand, and whether they gave off an odour during the settling period. Value for money: Mattresses are an investment, so price and value for money were key factors I considered, making sure I covered a range of budgets in my final selection. I looked at which mattresses balanced cost with quality, and which offered useful sleep trials. Why you can trust IndyBest reviews At IndyBest, we’re dedicated to bringing you honest, thorough and genuinely helpful product reviews.
