The Department of Education has thrown a lifeline to an embattled accreditor.
In March, the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity voted 12 to 0 against renewing recognition of the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education, citing a litany of issues, including concerns about student outcomes. But on Tuesday the Education Department overruled NACIQI and extended recognition for CNME for 12 months on a conditional basis.
CNME is the only federally recognized accreditor for naturopathic medicine, a growing field that emphasizes holistic practices. It has six member institutions, including one in Canada. If the programmatic accreditor had lost federal recognition, it’s not clear who would have stepped in.
