A 22-year-old passenger identified as Mayank Lohar was allegedly stabbed to death inside a moving local train running between Churchgate and Nallasopara over an argument to keep the coach door open during heavy rain.According to police, he was allegedly attacked between Andheri and Borivali stations and succumbed to his injuries after he was taken to Shatabdi Hospital.Borivali Government Railway Police (GRP) have registered a murder case as the accused stabbed Mayank with a sharp weapon.The accused identified as Roshan Suvarna was arrested on Wednesday (June 24, 2026).The video of the incident also went viral, which depicts the accused unbuttoning his shirt up to his navel and staring at the man lying in the pool, bloody on the train floor.According to GRP, the matter escalated after the commuters assaulted the accused, and in return, he removed the knife from his bag and attacked the deceased.Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh (MRPS), the Mumbai-based railway union, condemned the incident and called out the serious security failures in the Suburban Railway Network.MRPS Vice President Siddhesh Desai said, “This incident has once again exposed the serious shortcomings in passenger security across the Mumbai Suburban Railway network, which carries over 7.5 million commuters every day.”“Several major stations, including Thane, have been equipped with baggage scanners, metal detectors, CCTV cameras, and other security infrastructure. However, commuters frequently observe that many of these systems are either not consistently operated, inadequately monitored, or not utilised for systematic passenger screening. Unlike airports and Metro systems, there is no effective security screening mechanism that prevents individuals carrying knives, weapons, or other dangerous objects from entering the railway network,” he added.
