Puerto Rican politicians Ritchie Torres and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez easily secured renomination Tuesday night as Democratic candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives, in primaries in which candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani prevailed in three congressional contests across the city.Torres was receiving 72.9% of the vote, clearly defeating former state representative Michael Blake and a third candidate, José Vega.Ocasio-Cortez, meanwhile, defeated two other candidates by obtaining about 87% of the vote, according to data from The Associated Press. In heavily Democratic districts, both Ocasio-Cortez and Torres are strong favorites to win reelection as members of Congress in the federal legislative elections in November. But the story of the New York primaries was the victories of Democratic Socialist congressional candidates backed by Mayor Mamdani. On one hand, state representative Claire Valdez decisively defeated (56% to 36%) Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso for the Democratic nomination in the 7th District, the seat being vacated by Puerto Rican Representative Nydia Velázquez. While Valdez was supported by Mamdani, Reynoso, who is Dominican, had the backing of Representative Velázquez, who is retiring from the U.S. House of Representatives in December. In a district with nearly 9% Puerto Rican residents, both Valdez and Reynoso presented agendas on Puerto Rico that were closely aligned with the initiatives of Representative Velázquez.CNN and AP, meanwhile, projected a narrow victory for Darializa Ávila Chevalier in Harlem’s former Puerto Rican neighborhood—the 13th District—by defeating Representative Adriano Espaillat, who was the first Dominican elected to Congress and is president of the Hispanic Caucus.Ávila Chevalier is also of Dominican origin. With 86% of the vote counted, Ávila Chevalier was receiving 49.3% of the vote, compared with Espaillat’s 46%.In the 10th District of Manhattan’s Lower East Side—dubbed Loisaida by the Puerto Rican diaspora—former comptroller Brad Lander won the nomination for the U.S. House of Representatives by a 2-to-1 margin, defeating Representative Daniel Goldman (65.7% to 34.1%).In heavily Democratic districts, Valdez, Ávila Chevalier, and Lander are also favorites to win in November.
