TRENT BRIDGE — After two weeks of chaos during which his very international future came into grave doubt, Ben Stokes’ first public pronouncements since his ill-fated night out in Chelsea’s Rex Rooms were eagerly anticipated.

But after 20 minutes speaking to the media in an indoor nets facility at Trent Bridge appropriately-named Sobers Hall – irony isn’t dead yet is it? – it was what he didn’t say that really piqued interest.

How close did you come to retiring? Was the curfew in place that night after the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s? Did you feel supported?

Nothing clear came from these enquiries, with Stokes’ regularly referring back to “the process” like some kind of comfort blanket.
