At 30, Aakriti Goel had it all. The Bengaluru-based tech professional had a degree from BITS Pilani. A Rs 30 lakh per annum job. After graduating from BITS Pilani, Aakriti worked for some years in the corporate world. She eventually joined Healofy as Chief Of Staff. Although she loved her job, she soon experienced burn-out. The long working hours and stress ruined her health. In January 2020, her body surrendered: “I developed an unusual hormonal imbalance because of extreme stress and my body gave up,” she told India Today.Aakriti made a life-changing decision in March 2020 when she resigned from her corporate position, just days before the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown brought the country to a standstill. What followed was a bold leap into an entirely new chapter of her life. Her preparation involved solving more than 100 mock examinations, maintaining study sessions that often stretched to ten hours a day, and following carefully planned revision schedules to strengthen her understanding of every subject.Returning to academics after an absence of nearly a decade was far from simple. Rebuilding study habits and reconnecting with textbooks required tremendous determination and patience. She began her journey by attending freely available online Biology lectures, gradually expanding her preparation across the entire syllabus. Day after day, she devoted long hours to learning, revising, and testing herself, refusing to let the challenges of her unconventional path discourage her.Her dedication produced extraordinary results. Within only ten months of focused preparation, she had completed over a hundred practice tests and transformed herself into a highly competitive candidate. When the results of the NEET 2021 examination were declared, she achieved an impressive score of 676 marks and secured an All India Rank of 1118. The accomplishment exceeded expectations and left many astonished, proving that persistence and disciplined effort can overcome even the longest academic gaps.Today, Aakriti is pursuing the final year of her MBBS degree at Hindu Rao Medical College, continuing the journey that began with a courageous decision to leave behind a stable career and chase her dream of becoming a doctor.
