The Buffalo Sabres have a top-five pick in the NHL Draft on Friday, and they didn’t even need to endure another terrible season to get it.On Tuesday, the Sabres traded Bowen Byram and Jordan Greenway to the Chicago Blackhawks for the No. 4 pick in the 2026 draft, the No. 45 pick and defenseman Louis Crevier.The Sabres now have picks Nos. 4, 20 and 45 in this draft. The initial reaction is going to be that the Sabres, a contending team, should flip the fourth pick to make the team better right now. That’s certainly a possibility, but the Sabres should make sure they are moving it for a player who’s worth it. Not a ton of players would fit that description, especially in a one-for-one swap. But this would put the Sabres in play for just about anybody on the market. Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck, Red Wings center Dylan Larkin and Maple Leafs winger Matthew Knies are among the best players potentially available via trade. But an asset as strong as the No. 4 pick could open the door for conversations on other big names as well.But trading a top-five pick is rare. So if the Sabres decide to keep it, what are their options? There’s an off chance one of those forwards falls, and that would be a best-case scenario for the Sabres. Adding another high-end forward talent to the system would be a big boost. If one of these three is available, they would get a long look. McKenna and Stenberg are game-breaking offensive talents at wing. And Malhotra is the type of high-character, competitive player who projects as a true two-way center. Any of those three would be a fine pick.
