Alibaba Holding has sued the US government in US federal court in a bid to be removed from a list linking it to the Chinese military, saying the move had no legal basis and damages its reputation.

The company, which began in e-commerce but has extended into areas such as finance, cloud services and AI, was added to the US Department of Defence’s 1260H list on 8 June along with other major Chinese tech firms including search company Baidu, global electric car leader BYD, and chipmakers CXMT and YMTC.

In being added to the list, Alibaba was accused of being a “military-civil fusion contributor” through its affiliation with China’s China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and state asset regulator SASAC.
