ALBAWABA - A court in Cairo ordered Uber to pay EGP 10,000,000 (Over $200,000) in the case of Egyptian girl Habiba Shamaa, familiar as the "El-Shorouk Girl", who died after jumping out of a moving car in 2024.According to local media, representatives from Uber Egypt and Uber Inc. attended the court hearings. The lawsuit was based on claims for compensation for material and moral damages resulting from the accident, which the victim's family's lawyers argued was the legal responsibility of both companies.The story of Habiba Shamaa, El-Shorouk Girl:In February 2024, Habiba Shamaa, 24, was reportedly exposed to a kidnapping attempt after she requested a ride from the famous app, Uber, in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.According to Egyptian media, the woman took a ride to meet her friends at about 6:50 p.m. from 5th Settlement, where she lives. After getting in the car, Habiba called her mother, but she wasn't able to hear her daughter due to the loud music inside the car.The mother called Habiba Shamaa again and was surprised after a stranger picked up the phone, saying that her daughter threw herself outside of the car.Furthermore, an eyewitness, who saw the girl and was able to get some information about the incident. Shamaa told him that she was riding in an Uber car, and when the car driver tried to harass her, she jumped out of the car; she was taken to the hospital.After being hospitalized, Habiba Shamaa was in a coma in an intensive care room in a hospital in New Cairo. Her family announced her death on March 14, 2024.
