NEW YORK — The sight of Edward Cabrera writhing on the ground in pain was not one Craig Counsell needed to see Tuesday night.Cabrera had just made a nice play at first to end five innings of solid baseball. A few minutes later, he was being carted off the field with what the Cubs are calling a left hamstring/adductor strain.“It’s gonna be an IL placement,” Counsell said after the Cubs’ 9-6 victory over the New York Mets. “We’ll have imaging done (Wednesday) and see where that takes us.”With two outs in the fifth inning, Jared Young rolled a grounder to the left side of the infield. With Michael Busch and Nico Hoerner both making attempts on the ball, Cabrera ran to cover first. Hoerner fielded the ball cleanly and threw over to Cabrera, who stretched to make sure he’d record the out.Cabrera immediately reached towards his left groin area. He attempted to stand up, but quickly went back to the ground in clear pain. Eventually, Counsell, flanked by trainer Nick Frangella, came out to help Cabrera stand. The Cubs called for the cart as Cabrera struggled to stand on his own.Cabrera allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out four in his five innings of work. The Cubs targeted Cabrera in the offseason and acquired him via trade from the Miami Marlins, believing the talented 28-year-old righty was ready to take off. But it’s been an inconsistent first few months with his new team as he has posted a 5.10 ERA in 72 1/3 innings of work.
