The World Cup is in full flow, and there was always an expectation at Everton that the tournament would impact the transfer market, pushing most business into July and August. It was believed that players and agents would keep their powder dry in case standout performances led to greater interest after FIFA’s showpiece event was over. The risk is that a scramble ensues after clubs have played the waiting game.Everton were minded to try to avoid this by trying to push through at least some early business, but have so far been thwarted.Talks have continued with Middlesbrough over midfielder Hayden Hackney. But significant progress is yet to be made, with the Championship side valuing the former England Under-21 international, who has just one year remaining on his contract, in excess of the £16million package they accepted from Ipswich Town last summer, before the move fell through.Middlesbrough have made it clear they would be willing to allow Hackney to see out his contract if their valuation is not met, and Everton so far have been unwilling to budge. They are mindful that other Premier League clubs, including Crystal Palace, have been lurking in the background, but believe his preference is a move to Merseyside, provided a fee can be agreed.Talks are ongoing, but Everton are also pursuing alternatives, aware they need at least one new central midfielder this summer, potentially two.David Moyes’ side ended last season in disappointing fashion, spurning their shot at European qualification and slumping in the table. So there is plenty of work to be done and key questions need to be answered about the squad. We have already focused on the situation at right-back. But will Everton bring loanees Jack Grealish and Tyrique George back for next season? What will happen with midfield stalwart Idrissa Gueye? Will a new left-back be signed? And how likely are striking reinforcements? Here’s what The Athletic is hearing about Everton’s summer plans after speaking to multiple sources close to the club, who wish to remain anonymous to protect relationships…An uncertain future for Gueye?Idrissa Gueye will be 37 in September (Photo: Michael Regan/Getty Images)Everton have already seen one stalwart, in former captain Seamus Coleman, depart this summer. But could they be about to lose another? The Athletic reported last month that Gueye, 36, had not made the requisite number of Premier League starts (28) to trigger a mandatory one-year extension of his existing deal, which expires this summer.
