June 23 (Asia Today) -- South Korea's main opposition People Power Party launched an internal committee Tuesday to investigate ballot shortages during the June 3 local elections and called for the appointment of an opposition-recommended special counsel.

The party said the committee would operate alongside a separate parliamentary investigation to determine responsibility within the National Election Commission and recommend changes to the country's election management system.

People Power Party floor leader Jeong Jeom-sig spoke at the National Assembly during the first meeting of the Special Committee for Investigating Violations of Voting Rights and Reforming Election Management.

"The June 3 infringement of voting rights has reached a point where it can no longer be explained simply as a shortage of ballots," Jeong said.
