Dan Mullan/Getty ImagesJune 23, 2026 Updated 4:03 pm EDTDidier Deschamps has left France’s World Cup camp to return home following the death of his mother.In full agreement with the Federation Francaise de Football, the head coach has taken compassionate leave after receiving the news on Tuesday morning.He will be absent from the upcoming training sessions ahead of France’s final Group I match against Norway, and the game itself, scheduled for Friday at MetLife Stadium.Deschamps, a former World Cup winner as a player and coach, has the unconditional trust and respect of the FFF, having managed the national team for the past 14 years. In his absence his long-term assistant Guy Stephan will take over.
“The national team coach was deeply saddened to learn this morning of the passing of his mother,” said the FFF in a statement.“In agreement with Philippe Diallo, President of the French Football Federation, who is present at the French national team’s training camp, Didier Deschamps has entrusted his assistant, Guy Stephan, with the responsibility of leading the squad until his return. During this extremely painful time, we ask for your utmost respect and restraint.”France, one of the favourites for the World Cup, have six points from their wins over Senegal and Iraq and have qualified for the knockouts.Deschamps is one of the longest-serving managers in international football, having been appointed to the role in 2012.
