An early morning fire on Tuesday gutted part of a church building in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, after a candle left burning overnight ignited nearby materials in the boys’ quarters of the premises.

The PUNCH gathered that the incident occurred at about 06:18hrs at the Christ Celestial Church of God, Ife Oluwa in the Tanke area of Ilorin, affecting four rooms before firefighters contained the blaze.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, the agency said firefighters were deployed immediately to the scene and successfully prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the church and neighbouring structures.

Hassan explained that preliminary investigation pointed to human negligence involving an unattended candle as the source of the outbreak.
