One of Australia’s biggest renewable energy zones would be drastically scaled back under a proposed NSW opposition policy that could grind the gears of the Minns government’s plan to build enough large wind and solar farms to get the state off coal.

The New England Renewable Energy Zone is one of five declared areas for new wind and solar farms in NSW and is designed to support up to eight gigawatts of power, but has been plagued by cost concerns and pockets of fierce local resistance.
