Construction has officially begun on the R650 million GrandWest Mall development in Cape Town, marking the next phase in the expansion of the GrandWest entertainment precinct.
Flanagan & Gerard Property Group and GrandWest, a subsidiary of Sun International, marked the start of construction with a sod-turning ceremony following the transfer of the land into their joint venture, announced in May.
The 22,000m² single-level shopping centre is already more than 70% let, with a further 20% of its gross lettable area under offer, underscoring strong retailer demand more than a year before its planned opening in June 2027.
The design of the mall itself is inspired by the Western Cape as the curved form, derived from the Fibonacci sequence, creates visual references to shells, ocean waves and sailing craft, with lighting elements reference lobster cages and other coastal forms.
