Landon Donovan went through his closet recently, sorting through some of the jerseys he wore during the different levels of his playing career. The USMNT great is known for sporting the No. 10 jersey during World Cup play and for much of his LA Galaxy career. But within his search, he unearthed a No. 7 jersey from his time with German club Bayer Leverkusen early in his career.“They’re the iconic numbers that the iconic players wear,” Donovan said. “And so at any point during your career if you were sort of an attacking midfielder or forward or a wide player, you wanted to wear 7. In the wide player case, or as an attacking midfielder or forward, you wanted to wear 10. It’s just always been that way.“And the history of it is really special, too.”No kidding. Some of the most revered players in the sport’s history are forever tied to those two numbers.Notable No. 10s:
Lionel Messi
Pelé
Diego Maradona
Ronaldinho
